Day by day
Day 1 — Flight to Lodwar & Sunset at Eliye Springs
Catch a morning flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Lodwar. Upon arrival, a 4x4 will transfer you through the desert landscape to Eliye Springs, a beautiful oasis on the western shores of Lake Turkana lined with doum palms. Spend the afternoon relaxing on the sandy beach before visiting the nearby Longelech fishing village to watch traditional Turkana shore-fishing.
Day 2 — Hominid History at Nariokotome
Travel north along the lake to the Nariokotome excavation site. This is the landmark archaeological location where the famous "Turkana Boy" (Homo erectus) skeleton was discovered in 1984. A local guide will walk you through the dig site and explain why the region is known as the Cradle of Mankind. Return to Eliye Springs for a cultural evening of traditional Turkana dances around a campfire.
Day 3 — Boat Expedition to Central Island National Park
Board a motorboat to Central Island National Park, an eerie, volcanic island rising from the middle of the lake. Hike up to the rims of its three distinct crater lakes: Crocodile Lake (home to a massive breeding colony of Nile crocodiles), Flamingo Lake, and Tilapia Lake. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the island's black sand shores before boating back to the mainland for your final evening.
Day 4 — Lodwar Transfer & Departure
Enjoy a quiet morning breakfast looking out over the water. Transfer back to Lodwar town, checking out the local basketry markets for hand-woven Turkana crafts before catching your return flight to Nairobi.
